Description
FoodChain-Lab Web (FCL Web, https://fcl-portal.bfr.berlin/) is a free, open-source software platform that supports food safety authorities in tracing food and feed through complex global supply chains during foodborne outbreaks. Developed by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), FCL Web has evolved through collaborations including the EFSA–BfR cooperation, One Health EJP COHESIVE, and FoodSafeR into a modular, interoperable platform used by authorities such as AGES (Austria) and the U.S. FDA. Built on the One Health concept, it enables epidemiologists, veterinarians, and food safety professionals to jointly investigate outbreaks or other foodborne incidents by integrating tracing data collection with automated visualization, analysis, anonymization and reporting of the collected data within a single web-based application. Supply chains are displayed as interactive networks, allowing users to explore product flows, filter complex datasets, and test hypotheses such as cross-contamination events or geographic clustering using scoring algorithms. Through harmonized data formats and interfaces, FCL Web can be connected to national and European tracing systems, supporting cross-sectoral collaboration and rapid outbreak investigations. Beyond food supply chains, FoodChain-Lab has also been applied to animal movement tracing and hospital outbreak investigations, demonstrating its versatility as a One Health software solution for managing biological threats.
